I don't happen to agree, there's still RF being generated. People can have their opinions along the lines of 'its not real radio' - that's fine. It's easy & relaxed format means I'm not at the mercy of fickle HF conditions to enjoy being in contact with them when ever I wish - though I still do enjoy HF operating.
I've made many friends on the air via DMR, world wide. Affordable DMR radios, if the programming is understood and set up properly, offers a very cost effective new communication mode for hams interested in digital voice. Especially handy when unable to access HF at home, for example while out for a walk with the dogs, at work etc. A linked DMR system gives us access to more activity from the big cities etc. The local ham population is thinly spread around here. Why is DMR more "unhealthy" for the hobby? Some like to build and maintain repeaters. What percentage of those 750K licensed amateurs use satellite radio? Are they "dividing" the hobby, and being un-healthy for the hobby because they are using satellite links, rather than rag chewing on an analog repeater? If we follow your logic to it's ultimate conclusion, then we should all be only doing one mode? Maybe CW?įinally, what is so wrong with "further dividing" amateur radio operators? I've always thought that one of the strengths of the hobby is the multiple ways people could participate. We could apply your logic to almost any of the less popular modes. How therefore am I being un-healthy for amateur radio? Of the local folks I know who have DMR radios, every single one of them also sometimes use plain vanilla analog repeaters, as well as other modes. And, I often check in with our local weekly simplex net. I also play around now and then with APRS. However, I also use our local analog repeaters from time to time. #Dmr programming phone number how to
I dabble in DMR, and have found it interesting to learn how to make it work.
In the first place, you seem to be assuming that those who use DMR repeaters never use conventional analog repeaters, and/or other modes. Click to expand.Maybe I'm slow, but I don't quite see the logic of your post?
